Biography
Ángel Macías (June 29, 1993), originally from Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico, is a tenor who, since the 2023-2024 season, has been part of the soloist ensemble at Theater Aachen in Germany, where he has performed roles such as Rodolfo in Puccini’s La Bohème, Belfiore in Donizetti’s Il viaggio a Reims, and Gomatz in Mozart’s Zaïde. For the upcoming 2024-2025 season, he will perform the role of Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Pluto in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, and reprise his notable role in La Bohème.
His portrayal of Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the If Opera Festival in the UK in 2024 highlighted his capacity for lyrical roles in the bel canto tradition. “…the luscious Italianate tenor Ángel Macías, singing and acting a passionate and lithe young Edgardo, has a rich bright tenor with controlled phrasing and the ability to add heart-rending emotion to his voice.” (Opera Scene).
His international career gained momentum in 2021 when he was part of the renowned Salzburg Festival as part of the Young Singers Project, participating in several concerts and opera galas at the Mozarteum, accompanied by the Camerata Salzburg orchestra. That same year, he joined the Staatsoper Stuttgart Opera Studio during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 seasons, performing various roles in different operas, notably making his important debut as Fenton in Verdi’s Falstaff and Herr Herz in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor.
In addition to his operatic roles, Ángel has made significant concert appearances, including Mozart’s Great Mass in c-minor in Palma de Mallorca, Spain; his participation in the AIDS Gala in Düsseldorf in 2024; a concert version of La Bohème at the Gothenburg Opera in Sweden; his appearance at the 26th Ambassadeurs Lyriques Gala in Montreal, Canada; a concert at the Haus für Mozart in Salzburg, Austria; and accompanying the prestigious tenor Ramón Vargas in his Gala celebrating the 35th anniversary of his operatic career at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico. He has also performed with multiple Mexican orchestras, including the orchestra of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Puebla Symphony Orchestra, the Sonora Symphony Orchestra, the Aguascalientes Symphony Orchestra, the University of Guanajuato Orchestra, the Zacatecas Symphony Orchestra, the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mérida Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
Artistic Training
Ángel began his musical studies at the Escuela Superior de Música y Danza de Monterrey, Mexico. He quickly gained recognition, making his professional debut in 2015 in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He developed his skills and gained valuable experience through masterclasses with renowned artists such as Francisco Araiza, Elīna Garanča, Javier Camarena, Ramón Vargas, Gerald Finley, Vlad Iftinca, Eytan Pessen, Neil Shicoff, Michael Fabiano, among others.
He is currently a student of the prestigious tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz, who has been his mentor in recent years, guiding him and imparting lessons and experiences that have helped him develop in his operatic career.
In 2016, he made his debut at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, playing the Virrey in the Mexican opera La Güera by Carlos Jiménez Mabarak. He was part of the Opera Studio of Bellas Artes, EOBA, for two years (2016-2017 and 2017-2018). With the Bellas Artes company, he has sung in Puccini operas: Rinuccio and Gherardo in Gianni Schicchi (2017), Harry in La Fanciulla del West (2017 and 2019). He sang the leading role Ulises in Salsipuedes (2019) by composer Daniel Catán.
He performed Pong in Turandot (2018) at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara, Jalisco; Il Messaggero in Verdi’s Aida (2019); Gastone in Verdi’s La Traviata (2018); and Spoletta in Puccini’s Tosca (2019), both at the Teatro del Bicentenario in León, Guanajuato. He has participated in various Mexican opera festivals such as those in Oaxaca, Aguascalientes, Cervantino, and the Alfonso Ortiz Tirado Festival in Álamos, Sonora.
Awards
Ángel has gained recognition in various competitions, winning the first prize at the San Miguel Opera Competition in 2019 and being a finalist at the Nuits Lyriques competition in Marmande, France, where he won the audience award. He also participated in the final of the SWR Junge Opernstars in 2022 and showcased his talents at the 26th Ambassadeurs Lyriques Gala with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, where he received multiple awards, including Best Foreign Singer. He was awarded Edith the Special Opera Prize of Bellas Artes in 2019. He also won the Encouragement Grant at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
